Technology Detox

It’s been a little while since my last blog post.  I decided on a technology detox.  We were away on holidays, and I wanted to be fully present in the moment.  I only used my phone to take pictures, the occasional update and to keep in contact with family.  I think it was beneficial.  Although it’s been a struggle getting back to working on a computer all day.  My eyes have really found it difficult!

Have you ever done a technology detox?  I work in administration and spend my entire workday looking at a computer screen, so I did some reading on the subject to find out what the benefits are.

What is a digital detox?

Well for me it was taking a break from using electronic devices.  I didn’t check emails, scroll social media, or use a computer for a little over two weeks.

What were the benefits?

Unplugging from technology can have some fantastic effects.  While the world is driven by technology it’s a great idea to have a break.

As we were travelling to parts of Australia we have never been before I was able to pay more attention to our surroundings.  I felt more relaxed and not stressed out by the pressure that you feel when scrolling social media.  I was happy, more in control and as a bonus my eyes did not run or feel irritated for two whole weeks!!

Another positive outcome was no headaches for two whole weeks.  It was wonderful.  My brain felt like it could focus more and wasn’t clouded.

Col didn’t touch his phone for several days at a time.  I only used mine to communicate with family and on the odd occasion find out where we were to ensure we didn’t get too lost.  We found some brilliant places to explore.

I think the biggest advantages were the detox from social media.  I realised how much it impacts detrimentally on my anxiety and depression levels.  It’s not that I am envious of someone else’s life its more that they leave you out of things and you only know because you see it on social media.

What can you do while detoxing?

We were on holidays, so we focused completely on discovering new places and new experiences.

There are so many other things you can do to fill your time.  Meet a friend for coffee, read a new book, exercise, practice mindful breathing or meditation.

It’s all about balance.  We have to engage with technology to be able to contribute to society but find that happy medium where you don’t lose yourself!
